San Fransisco: Golden Gate Park

Saturday afternoon, after Coit Tower and a lovely lunch near Miara's house, we took a walk through Golden Gate Park. It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm. I was still marveling at how nice the weather was, grateful to not need a jacket. Dash decided to skip the walk in the park and take a nap in the car. Jonathan and Miara set the pace at a brisk speed, Raym was a bit behind them and I was bringing up the rear, although not by too much, I am happy to say. The park is huge and we explored a very small portion of it, but the thing that still amazes me is that one can immerse themselves in nature right in the middle of a bustling city. It felt like being in the forest, (except for maybe the car that drove by with the stereo loud enough for the whole city to hear).

I was surprised to see buffalo there and had to take a picture. Apparently buffalo have been kept here since 1892 in an attempt to save the American Bison. The park folks seemed very proud of the accomplishment according to the information provided at the site. They have successfully bred them and provided buffaloes to many zoos. The only wild herd of buffalo in the US is protected in Montana at Yellowstone National Park. All the rest of these animals are in some sort of captivity like the ones in Golden Gate Park.

Raym, Jonathan and Miara stand observing the buffaloes while they do a whole lot of nothing.

I guess there really is not much for them to do besides eat and sleep. I wondered if they would be happier in Montana with their wild brethren.

On the later part of our walk, just past the buffalo paddock, we came across this tree, which I thought was pretty cool.

Once our morning of tourist exploration was over, we headed back to the hotel for a nice afternoon nap. Since Dash had been sleeping while we walked, he was forced to cruise the streets and check out the Union Square neighborhood on his own.
